My Hands – An Artel Exhibition

Hosted by Redcliffe Art Gallery, My Hands is a visual art exhibition presenting recent works from the Artel Studio. The artworks on display trace the unique qualities of each artist’s creative expression and experience.

The exhibition title is drawn from Artel artist Nathan Langdown, who describes his artistic process as coming, “from my hands to the page.”

Run by CPL – Choice, Passion, Life, Artel is a professional art studio, offering a space for artists with disability to express themselves using visual languages that are contemporary, distinctive and undeniably their own.

Louise Taylor is the Visual Arts Coordinator at Artel and says this exhibition is a different format to how the artists of Artel have exhibited in the past, as the works were selected by Redcliffe Art Gallery Curator, Hannah Williamson.

“Her vision was to synthesise collections of work created by 12 Artel artists that display a clear personal narrative that exists for each selected artist,” Louise said.

Moreton Bay Regional Council have worked with Artel Studio to present exhibitions at Redcliffe Art Gallery for more than twenty years, and Curator Hannah Williamson says they are a much-anticipated feature in the gallery’s programming.

“Artel Studio is innovative in their approach to support artists to create works that truly reflect their style and interests. We hope this comes through to visitors,” Hannah said.

My Hands includes 49 works from 12 artists, five of whom - Karl Muller, Eboni Lutz, Emma-Jay Groomes, Tracy Richards and Matt Uhlmann-Taylor – will be exhibiting for the first time.

The exhibition explores each artist’s individual style from early preparatory pieces through to finished prints, drawings and sculpture. In each phase of production, the artist is present through their physical mark-making, colour selection and composition.

“I just like taking photos of sunsets. I do everything on my phone. I really took a photo with the car to add effects. It was on a Friday afternoon. I took the photo while I was waiting for the taxi on Jessie's last night shift,” - Dan Swart, Artel Artist.

Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Art Galleries team previously partnered with Artel and Museums and Galleries Queensland to present Reasonable and Necessary, a major retrospective of art from the Artel Studio. The exhibition is currently continuing a successful tour of Queensland until late 2022.

The My Hands exhibition will run at Redcliffe Art Gallery from Saturday 29 January – Thursday 14 April 2022. Entry is free.
